I often get pretty depressed when reading about how many ignorant, intolerant, xenophobic, and closed-minded people we have in our country.
I get the sense, though, that despite our history, the US is miles ahead of most of Europe in terms of racism and social justice. The UK’s reaction to the riots has largely ignored Black voices; casual racism is tolerated fairly broadly in Spain; bananas are thrown at soccer players in Russia.
We’ve got a long way to go in the US, but we can take some solace in where we are now. I imagine that we’re a more just society, on the whole, than we were 30 years ago (though maybe not 10).
